U.S. Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, has died after a daylight shooting near the White House. The November 26, 2025, attack left another servicemember in critical condition and has prompted a major federal investigation to determine if it was an act of terrorism.

The ambush occurred around 2:15 p.m. near the Farragut West metro station. Specialist Beckstrom and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe were on a foot patrol when a suspect approached and opened fire at close range.

The alleged gunman has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national. He was wounded by return fire and taken into custody. Lakanwal had previously worked with a CIA-backed unit and was granted U.S. asylum in April 2025.

Specialist Beckstrom, who joined the Guard in 2023, was described as a dedicated volunteer committed to her duties. Her death was confirmed by the President and officials from her home state of West Virginia.
