COVID isn’t gone yet. A new, highly contagious strain called ‘Stratus’ is spreading globally, making up a large proportion of new cases. Medically, it’s known as XFG, with slightly different symptoms than previous variants.

Unlike the original virus, known for a persistent dry cough, ‘Stratus’ may cause a hoarse voice, sore throat, and digestive issues. Dr. Sami, speaking on TikTok, explained: “Most people are complaining of a really hoarse voice, or a super sore throat,” adding that it also presents with “GI symptoms,” including nausea, vomiting, bloating, and acid reflux. Despite this, the variant seems to cause a milder infection than earlier strains.

The strain has two main variants, XFG and XFG.3, which are now among the most common in the UK, alongside Nimbus (NB.1.8.1). It’s expected to spread quickly, especially during a season when people naturally feel more run down.

A new winter COVID vaccine is being rolled out in the UK from October 1, but it’s limited to people over 75, the immunocompromised, or those in care homes.

As the virus evolves, staying aware of new symptoms and eligible vaccinations is key.
