The brutal killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, 23, has shaken the nation, and now, the Trump administration is vowing swift justice, with President Donald Trump calling for the death penalty against her accused killer.
A Commuter Train Horror
On August 22, chilling surveillance footage captured Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, calmly sitting in a red hoodie on a Charlotte light rail train before suddenly unfolding a knife and stabbing Zarutska in the neck just minutes after she boarded.
The young refugee, who had fled Ukraine’s war in 2022 and worked at a local pizzeria, looked up at her attacker in terror, clutching her head as blood gushed down her uniform. Passengers appeared stunned into silence, with some walking away as Zarutska slumped to the floor. She died on the train surrounded by horrified commuters.
“Animal” With 14 Arrests
Brown, a career criminal with 14 prior arrests, has a record stretching back to 2011, including armed robbery, burglary, larceny, and assault. He had also been arrested earlier this year for delusional 911 calls claiming the government was controlling his brain.
Despite repeated offenses and a schizophrenia diagnosis, Brown was repeatedly released back onto the streets. He is now charged with first-degree murder and a federal count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, which Justice Department officials (as reported by The Sun) called a “terroristic act.”
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson nearly broke down in tears as he announced the federal charges: “This brutal attack on an innocent woman simply trying to get to her destination is an attack on the American way of life. Iryna deserves justice, and we will bring justice to her and her family.”
Trump’s Fury
President Trump did not hold back in his response, unleashing a fiery message on Truth Social: “The animal who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine… should be given a ‘quick’ (there is no doubt!) trial, and only awarded the death penalty. There can be no other option!!!”
In a video message, Trump added: “She was slaughtered by a deranged monster who was roaming free after 14 prior arrests. We cannot allow a depraved criminal element of violent repeat offenders to continue spreading destruction and death throughout our country. We have to respond with force and strength — we have to be vicious, just like they are.”
He further blamed Democratic policies for keeping violent offenders on the streets, saying Zarutska’s blood was “on the hands of Democrats who refuse to put bad people in jail.”
“She Loved America”
Zarutska’s family, heartbroken, said she had come to the U.S. to escape war and find safety, only to be killed in the most horrific way. “Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her,” relatives told WSOC-TV.
Federal officials revealed her family declined to have her body returned to Ukraine. Instead, she will be buried in the country she had embraced. “She loved America,” Ferguson said.
A Fight Over Safety
The case has triggered a national debate over crime, mental health, and public transit safety. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has already threatened to cut millions in federal funding to Charlotte’s light rail system if officials cannot ensure passenger protection.
Meanwhile, Brown is committed to a psychiatric hospital for 60 days of evaluation, but if prosecutors succeed, he could ultimately face the death penalty, exactly as Trump and top federal officials have vowed.
For Iryna’s family, justice cannot come soon enough.
