If you’re among those who think you’ve seen it all in our beautiful and violent Mexico, let me tell you, you’re very wrong. Reality always surpasses fiction, and the story I bring you today, fresh and dripping with venom, is living proof that human evil knows no bounds.
We all got that damn notification on our phones a few hours ago. We were on the bus, eating a snack, or just scrolling through Facebook, when suddenly: “BREAKING NEWS: Couple arrested for killing…see more .” Ah, how morbid curiosity gets the better of us, folks! We clicked, of course we did, because we wanted to know who had been killed, where, and why. But I swear on my dear mother that no one was prepared for the filth that was revealed.
THE VICTIM: AN ANGEL WHO DID NOT DESERVE THAT HELL
To understand the magnitude of this horror, we must first speak of someone who is no longer with us. Doña Martita, a 78-year-old woman who was pure heart. One of those grandmothers you don’t see anymore, who would greet you in the morning, who sold gelatin desserts at her front door to make ends meet, and who always had a kind word for her neighbors, even when the neighborhood was on fire.
Doña Martita had been living alone since she became a widow, but about six months ago, she made the biggest “mistake” of her life: opening the doors of her humble home to her godson, Brandon “N”, alias “El Brayan”, and his girlfriend, Kimberly “N”, alias “La Britany”.
WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING: THIS IS HOW THEY GAINED THEIR TRUST
These two young angels, barely 22 and 20 years old respectively, arrived with their tails between their legs. They were crying to the lady, saying they were penniless, that they’d been kicked out of their homes, that they wanted to “get their lives back on track.” Pure theater, my friends! Pure cheap hypocrisy!
Doña Martita, with her characteristic heart of gold, gave them shelter in a small rooftop room. At first, the cynical fellows even helped her sweep the sidewalk and ran errands. They seemed like the perfect couple trying to make ends meet. But it was all part of a macabre plan, a play directed by Satan himself.
What these parasites really wanted wasn’t a roof over their heads, it was the lady’s savings. The wretched creatures found out that Doña Martita had just received back pay from her welfare pension and that, moreover, she kept her life savings under her mattress because she didn’t trust banks. That sealed their fate!
NIGHT OF TERROR: CHRONICLE OF A BETRAYAL FORETOLD
Last Tuesday night, the neighborhood was quiet. Too quiet. The neighbors, those with the hearing of a consumptive, say they didn’t hear a single scream. There wasn’t a fight. And that, my friends, is what really gets my blood boiling.
“Brayan” and “Britany,” high as kites on who knows what synthetic junk to give them courage, came down from the rooftop. They didn’t have to force any locks. They had a key. They walked right into the room where the woman who had fed them was sleeping peacefully.
What happened in there is too graphic and painful to describe without making our stomachs churn. We’ll just say they showed no mercy. They didn’t use firearms to avoid making noise. They used their bare hands and the advantage of their youth against a defenseless old woman. They suffocated her with her own pillow while she, surely, stared at them with eyes of terror and disbelief upon seeing who her executioners were.
THE FEAST OF THE VULTURES AND THE ESCAPE
Once they had committed the atrocious act, these monsters felt no remorse. Not at all! They turned the house upside down. They ripped up the mattresses, emptied the closets, and threw the family photos on the floor. They searched for the money like rabid dogs.
And they found it. It’s said to have been around 80,000 pesos, decades’ worth of savings from selling gelatin desserts and from her pension. With the loot in hand, and leaving Doña Martita’s body lying on her bed as if it were nothing, “El Brayan” and “La Britany” grabbed their things and made their getaway in the early morning, thinking they had committed the perfect crime.
THE DISCOVERY THAT ARMED THE NEIGHBORHOOD
It wasn’t until the next day at noon that a neighbor, surprised that Doña Martita hadn’t gone out to sell her gelatin desserts, looked out the window. The smell of gas (which those idiots had left open to try to cause an explosion and destroy evidence, but it backfired because the tank ran out) alerted her.
When the police finally arrived, the scene was horrific. But what really ignited the fury was when the forensic experts confirmed it hadn’t been a random robbery. It had been an inside job. The entire neighborhood knew who the culprits were. Fury erupted in the streets. They wanted to lynch them if they saw them!
THE HUNT: THEIR LUCK RAN OUT IN A DIRTY MOTEL
This is where the good news comes in, the kind that gives us a glimmer of hope that justice does sometimes prevail, even if it’s late and inadequate. The authorities, pressured by the social media outcry and the fury of the neighborhood, finally got their act together.
They traced the cell phone signals of these parasites. It turns out that the idiots, thinking they were millionaires with the stolen money, went to check into a cheap motel on the outskirts of Pachuca, one of those places that charge by the hour and smell like cheap soap and sin. They were “celebrating” their crime, spending Doña Martita’s money on cocaine and cheap alcohol, planning to flee to the border the next day.
But their party was spoiled, you bastards!
THE CAPTURE: THIS IS HOW THE RATS FELL
The operation was like something out of a movie. State police surrounded the seedy motel at 3 a.m. When they broke down the door of room 23, they found “Brayan” and “Britany” in their underwear, surrounded by empty bottles and looking like they were wondering, “What happened?”
They offered no resistance. “Brayan” tried to cry, saying he was very high and didn’t know what he was doing. “Britany,” more cynical, just stayed silent, staring at the ground with that “it wasn’t me” face that no one believes anymore.
In the room they found a large part of the cash, still with the rubber bands that Doña Martita put on them.
WE WANT BLOOD! THE PEOPLE DEMAND THE MAXIMUM PENALTY
There’s the screenshot they saw on their phones. The faces of these two, now without Instagram filters, show what they are: empty shells, capable of the worst for a few bucks.
They’re in jail now, waiting for a judge to hand down their sentence. But the people aren’t happy. They’re fed up with them going in one door and out the other for “lack of evidence” or some legal technicality.
This time, society demands they rot in jail. There is no forgiveness for those who treacherously murder an elderly woman. There is no forgiveness for the ungrateful.
Let the image of Doña Martita serve as a reminder that the devil sometimes wears the face of a needy godson. And let the image of these two behind bars serve as a warning to all the rats who think they can get away with it.
