According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), emergency responders were called to the rural community after reports of an active shooter on the school campus. Police found multiple victims inside the school, and later two more bodies were recovered in a home believed to be connected to the incident. The suspected shooter, described as a woman, was also found deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound. 

Community in Mourning and Shock

Tumbler Ridge, a small town of roughly 2,400 people nestled in northeastern British Columbia, was thrust into crisis as the news spread. School officials confirmed that the secondary school, which serves students in grades 7–12, has been closed and counseling is being offered for students, staff, and families. 

Authorities also reported that more than 25 people sustained injuries, with some airlifted to hospitals with serious conditions, while others were treated locally for non-life-threatening wounds. 

Response and Reactions

Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Columbia officials, expressed deep condolences and solidarity with the victims and the community. They highlighted the bravery of first responders and emphasized ongoing support for those affected by the tragedy. 

At present, investigators continue to look into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting, and have stated there is no known ongoing threat to the public.
