20 YEARS SINCE THE CUMBRES CASE: THE TRUTH THAT DIEGO SANTOY COULDN’T HIDE

The Cumbres Tragedy: Chronicle of an Obsession

In the early morning hours of  March 2, 2006 , the silence of the Cumbres neighborhood in Monterrey, Mexico, gave no hint of the storm of violence that would erupt behind the walls of the Peña Coss family home. In a residential area where calm reigned, an act was committed that would shake the foundations of the entire society. Under that roof, two young children— 3-year-old María Fernanda and  7-year-old Erik Azur —slept in what should have been their refuge, unaware that danger had already crossed the fence.

The Setting and the Protagonists

The dynamics in the house on Monte Casino Street were complex. The parents,  Teresa Coss  and  Gonzalo Peña , were separated. Teresa, a public figure known for her work as an astrologer on television, was often absent due to work commitments, delegating the household responsibilities to her older daughters:  Azura  and  Erika .

Eighteen-year-old Erika was going through a period of quiet rebellion. She felt suffocated by the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings, a role she hadn’t chosen. In the midst of this dissatisfaction,  Diego Santoy Riverol appeared . At first, Diego was the ideal boyfriend; he played video games with Erika and was accepted by the family. However, behind the facade of a “good prospect” lurked a possessive personality. When Erika, exhausted by Diego’s jealousy, decided to end the relationship, he refused to accept her rejection. Diego’s theft of a cell phone was the final straw, but for him, it was only the beginning of a desperate plan.

The Dawn of the Attack

That night, Teresa Coss wasn’t home. Azura was upstairs with headphones on, lost in her music, oblivious to the world. Downstairs, Erika was asleep, while the housekeeper,  Catalina Bautista , rested in the master bedroom, taking care of little María Fernanda.

Diego Santoy arrived at the house with his face covered by a ski mask. He scaled the fence and entered with lethal determination. His initial intention, according to the police report, was to confront Erika. After a brief and tense argument in which she refused to get back together with him, Diego lost his temper. Armed with a sharp object from the kitchen and a sledgehammer, he unleashed hell.

First, he attacked  Erik Azur , the boy he used to play with, taking his life with inexplicable fury. Catalina, hearing the commotion, tried to intervene, but she was overpowered, beaten, and locked in a bathroom, bound hand and foot. The horror didn’t end there. María Fernanda, awakened by the chaos, went out into the hallway. Diego, hearing the echo of her small shoes, intercepted her and, using a blind cord, ended her life. Finally, he returned for Erika, severely wounding her neck and chest before striking her with the mallet. Believing her dead in a pool of blood, Diego decided to flee.

To ensure her escape, she dragged Catalina out of the bathroom, forced her into the trunk of the family car, and drove several kilometers to downtown Monterrey. There, in an act as bizarre as it was cynical, she released her by giving her ten pesos for bus fare. Meanwhile, back at the house, Erika managed to crawl out to get help. Azura went downstairs and found the carnage. The news spread like wildfire: the case of the  “Cumbres Killer” had begun .

The Escape and the Capture

Diego contacted his brother Mauricio to flee south, intending to cross into Guatemala. The search was nationwide; his face was on every television screen. Four days later, on March 6, federal police intercepted them at a checkpoint in  Oaxaca . Diego did not resist. As he was being taken back to Monterrey, what would become an unprecedented media and legal spectacle began.

Confrontations and Contradictory Versions

The trial became a battleground of testimonies. Diego, in a defensive maneuver, changed his original version of events. In the most famous confrontation with Erika, he accused her of being the mastermind, claiming that she hated her brothers and that the crime was a “love pact.”

“I’m willing to pay for what’s mine, but not for what’s yours,” Diego declared.

Erika, with visible scars on her neck, responded firmly: “My hands are clean, just like my soul.” The forensic examinations supported the young woman, confirming that her wounds were defensive and that there was no evidence of her active participation. Diego also tried to implicate Teresa Coss, alleging a secret relationship with her to destabilize the family, but his claims lacked material evidence and were dismissed as media hype.

The End of the Story: Judgment and Destiny

The legal process was long and arduous, fueled by the morbid curiosity of a society that couldn’t comprehend how a young man from an upper-middle-class background had become a monster. Finally, the court delivered its verdict.

Diego Santoy Riverol  was initially sentenced to 138 years in prison, a sentence that, after several appeals and reduction processes under Mexican law, was reduced to  71 years . Although his defense attempted to reopen the case on multiple occasions alleging irregularities in the confrontations, the physical evidence—the fingerprints, Catalina’s testimony, and Erika’s injuries—remained unshakeable.

Today, Diego remains incarcerated in the Cadereyta prison. Over time, he married the founder of his fan club in prison (a disturbing social phenomenon stemming from the case) and has sought to lead a low-profile life behind bars.

Erika Peña Coss , for her part, disappeared from the public eye after recovering from her injuries. She changed her residence and rebuilt her life far from Monterrey, carrying the burden of being the sole survivor of a night that took her siblings from her. The house in Cumbres, the scene of the tragedy, was demolished years later, as if the city wanted to erase from its map the place where innocence was sacrificed to obsession.

The Cumbres case was legally closed, but the question of what was truly going through Diego’s mind that morning remains an enigma that court records will never fully explain. The story ends where it began: with the memory of two children who should never have woken up in the middle of a nightmare.
