The tragedy in Itumbiara, in the state of Goiás, involved Thales Naves Alves Machado, a 40-year-old agricultural engineer and public official who killed his two young sons before taking his own life. The case shocked the local community and drew national attention due to his social status and apparent family stability.
According to investigators, Thales had been experiencing intense emotional distress and suspicion about his wife’s alleged infidelity. Before the crime, he posted a farewell message on social media expressing despair and indicating he intended to end his life and his children’s lives. Authorities later confirmed he acted alone.
During the night, he used a legally owned firearm to shoot his sons while they slept. Emergency responders transported the children to the hospital, but both died from their injuries. Thales was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials, including Goiás governor Ronaldo Caiado, expressed condolences, and the city declared official mourning. Police emphasized that the crime was the result of domestic violence and emotional instability, not the actions of any third party.
The case remains a painful reminder of how untreated psychological distress, possessiveness, and inability to cope with personal crises can lead to devastating consequences for families and communities.
