HELP IDENTIFY HIM AND LOCATE HIS FAMILY … See more

USA, AT THE CRITICAL HOURS OF THE DAY. — Oh my goodness, my friends! Brace yourselves and get your tissues ready, because this news really cuts, it cuts deep, right to the bone. If you have blood in your veins and aren’t naive, prepare to feel a lump in your throat and a helpless rage that can only be relieved by helping others.

We’re not talking about the latest celebrity gossip, nor the political scandal of the day that we’ll forget tomorrow. No, gentlemen. We’re talking about something much more sacred, something that could happen to any of us, to our elders, to our people: the life of a human being, of a fellow countryman, a man who could be your father, your uncle, that grandfather who tells you stories on Sundays with a coffee in his hand, and who today, by cruel and mysterious twists of fate, is a ghost in life.

The image at the top of this urgent report needs no Instagram filters or flashy editing. It’s the stark reality that hits us like a brick wall. A face reflecting utter confusion, eyes staring without seeing, as if trapped in a thick fog they can’t escape no matter how hard they try to remember. The brief text accompanying it, the same one that came with the original photo now going viral, is a direct blow to the national conscience: “HELP IDENTIFY HIM AND LOCATE HIS FAMILY . ”

Seven words. Just seven damn words that encapsulate a monumental tragedy that has thousands of Mexicans on tenterhooks, as we have already shared this post.

THE SHOCKING DISCOVERY: WHO IS THIS “STRANGER” WHO APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE?

According to preliminary reports reaching our newsroom—and spreading like wildfire in WhatsApp groups of neighborhood watch groups and missing persons pages—this man was found in heartbreaking conditions.

It’s not known for sure whether he was wandering the labyrinthine, cold streets of the capital in the early morning hours, whether he appeared disoriented on some lonely highway in the State of Mexico dodging tractor-trailers, or whether some good Samaritan saw him sitting on a sidewalk, shivering with cold and fear in some forgotten corner of the country. The key point is that he appeared out of nowhere, as if fallen from the sky, but without a guardian angel to whisper in his ear who he is.

Imagine the scene, my friends, put yourselves in his shoes for a second: him all alone, perhaps hungry, his clothes dirty from days of wandering lost, and worst of all, absolutely terrified of not knowing which way was north or south. When the authorities or paramedics approached him to ask the routine questions: “What’s your name, boss?”, “Where do you live?”, “Who can we call?”, his response was the most painful silence, a glazed stare, or incoherent babbling that led nowhere.

He has no wallet. He doesn’t have his voter ID card, the one that’s so commonplace for us. He doesn’t even have a crumpled piece of paper with a phone number written on it. Nothing. He’s devoid of identity, as if he were born yesterday, but in a weary body.

And that’s where the real bureaucratic nightmare that terrifies us comes in: he is currently under the protection of the authorities —probably in a cold temporary shelter, an emergency room of an overcrowded general hospital or, God forbid, at risk of being transferred to psychiatric institutions if his family is not found quickly—, labeled with the most dehumanizing and cruel phrase that exists in the system: “AS AN UNKNOWN PERSON” or the dreaded “NN” (No Name).

What a mess, excuse my language! That a whole lifetime of work, love, laughter, building a family, can be reduced in one fell swoop to the label of “unknown.” We can’t let that be the end of his story!

THE SPOKEN PORTRAIT OF PAIN: LOOK AT IT CAREFULLY, PLEASE

Let’s try to empathize, fellow citizens. Look at the photo accompanying the alert again. Don’t just scroll through it. Look closely at that man. Analyze his features.

Do you see those deep wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes? They’re not there for no reason, they’re not makeup. They’re the map of a life of hard work, from sunrise to sunset, perhaps breaking his back in the fields, perhaps carrying heavy loads on a construction site, perhaps working behind a counter, enduring hardship to provide for his family. His brown skin, weathered by time, screams “Mexico” from every pore. His hair, now white with the gray of experience, deserves respect, deserves to be caressed by a familiar hand, not by the latex gloves of a nurse on duty who, however well-intentioned, doesn’t know how to call him by his first name.

Maybe you don’t know him personally. Maybe he’s not your neighbor. But I assure you, by the Virgin of Guadalupe, that someone, somewhere in this vast and chaotic country, is going crazy with grief right now, searching for him.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN: A FAMILY IN THE HELL OF UNCERTAINTY

Let’s think now about the other side of this tragedy, about those who aren’t in the picture. Let’s think about that house where right now there’s an empty chair at the table and a plate of food that’s gone cold waiting.

Will there be a wife, an elderly woman, who has spent hours or days calling her cell phone, only to have it go straight to voicemail, rosary clutched in her hand, praying to Saint Jude Thaddeus that her husband will return safely, that he’s just running late? Will there be desperate children who have already searched hospitals, police stations, the morgue, posting photocopied flyers with masking tape on lampposts, their hope dwindling with every step they take?

The pain of not knowing is the worst of all pains, my friends. It’s an acid that eats away at your soul. Uncertainty is Chinese water torture. Every time the phone rings in that house, their hearts leap out of their chests, thinking: “Is it him? Is it the police? Is it the news we’re waiting for… or the news we fear?” That family doesn’t sleep, doesn’t eat; they live in a suspended hell, imagining the worst in this Mexico of ours that is sometimes so violent and merciless with the vulnerable.

They don’t know that their loved one is safe (relatively speaking), that they’re under a roof. They imagine they’re still out on the street, cold, or worse. We have to break that cycle of anguish!

EVERYONE, IT’S TIME TO STAND UP! THE URGENT CALL TO ACTION

This is where you come in, my friend, my buddy, my pal who’s glued to your phone all day looking at memes. The internet is an incredibly powerful tool, sometimes for bad things, for gossip, but today it has to be for good. Today it has to be the conduit for the miracle this family desperately needs.

I’m not asking you for money. I’m not asking you to go out and march in the streets. I’m asking you for something easier, faster, but infinitely valuable: YOUR FINGER .

That little “Share” button on your Facebook, WhatsApp, or Twitter is the difference between life and oblivion for this man. Don’t just scroll past it. Stop for a second. It takes less than a minute.

  1. LOOK AT THE PHOTO AGAIN CAREFULLY: Does he resemble the neighbor you haven’t seen on the block in a while? The man who used to sell candy outside the school years ago? The distant uncle from the village your parents used to talk about? Any resemblance, however small, could be the key to unlocking this mystery.

  2. SHARE IT EVERYWHERE, WITHOUT SHAME: Not just on your wall for your three friends to see. Send it to the family WhatsApp group (the one where they only send good morning emojis), to the gossipy neighbors’ group, to the work group. Upload it to your stories. Let it truly go viral, let it reach every corner of the country!

  3. IF YOU HAVE A TIPPING OUT, SPEAK UP!: If you think you recognize him, even just a little, don’t hesitate thinking, “Oh, maybe it’s not him.” The original social media post (where it says “…See more”) surely includes contact numbers for the prosecutor’s office, the search commission, or the civil association handling the case. Call! Your anonymous call could be the light at the end of the tunnel.

THE END OF THIS STORY DEPENDS ON US

Mexico is full of bad news, we know that, we’re fed up with it. Every day we wake up to tragedies. But we also know that when our people unite, when our hearts are touched, we are unstoppable. We are the country that rises after earthquakes, the one that forms human chains to help strangers.

This is a personal earthquake for a family. Let’s show that we haven’t lost our humanity amidst so much violence. Let’s not allow this elderly man to be lost in the cold system of bureaucracy. Let’s not allow indifference to prevail.

Let’s give this story a happy ending, one that makes us cry tears of joy, with reunions, hugs, and a hearty “Thank God you’re home, old man.” Share this, damn it! It’s urgent! His family is waiting for him, and every minute counts! Let’s do this for him today!
