The department stated, ‘The program to audit unused or unnecessary credit cards has been broadened to include 32 agencies. After a duration of 10 weeks, more than 500,000 cards have been deactivated.’ Initially, there were approximately 4.6 million active credit cards or accounts at the commencement of the audit.
In the last update provided by DOGE on March 11, the department had canceled just over 200,000 cards across 16 agencies, indicating a significant increase in cancellations in the most recent report. ‘There is still more work to be done,’ the post concluded.
The DOGE team has not yet disclosed specific figures regarding anticipated savings. Earlier this year, they reported that 4.6 million credit cards facilitated 90 million unique transactions, amounting to approximately $40 billion in spending for the fiscal year 2024.
Expenditures surged significantly during the Biden Administration, with credit card spending reaching $32.8 billion in fiscal year 2022, marking an increase of nearly $7 billion within just two years. Currently, the DOGE team has deactivated 169,793 purchase cards and 330,330 travel cards.
The agencies and departments that experienced the most reductions include the Department of the Interior, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
President Trump has confirmed that the Department of Government Efficiency will persist in its objective of eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse at the federal level, despite the initiative’s founder, Elon Musk, stepping back from his role in the administration.
In an interview with Fox News, Musk expressed his satisfaction with his collaboration with the administration and acknowledged the significant contributions of DOGE. He indicated that his departure is primarily motivated by his intention to concentrate on his various business ventures, as stated to Lara Trump.
“It has certainly been an eventful year, to say the least. At least I can say I wasn’t shot, which is a positive aspect,” Musk remarked. “However, we have experienced incidents where individuals have attacked Tesla stores and set fire to Tesla vehicles. I did not anticipate such a degree of violence,” he added.
Musk conveyed pride in his contributions to DOGE and confidence in the team’s ability to reduce government inefficiencies, but he emphasized his desire for his legacy to be characterized by the advancement of civilization. “I aspire to be remembered for my role in propelling civilization forward, enhancing our collective knowledge and capabilities — for contributing to our understanding of the universe,” Musk reflected on his legacy.
