A devastating fire has swept through multiple high-rise buildings at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Hong Kong, resulting in at least 13 confirmed fatalities. Among those who died was a 37-year-old firefighter, Ho Wai-ho, who collapsed at the scene.

The blaze, which started around 2:51 pm local time on November 26, has also left 15 people injured. Three of the victims are reported to be in critical condition due to burns sustained in the incident.

Fire officials currently do not have data on how many people were inside the buildings or may have become trapped. It is believed the fire spread rapidly across bamboo scaffolding surrounding the structures.

A massive emergency response is underway, with approximately 700 firefighters deployed to control the flames. Their efforts are focused on containing the widespread fire across several tower blocks.

Tai Po District Councillor Mui Siu-fung reported that over 1,000 residents have been evacuated to a temporary shelter. The complex, occupied since 1983, is home to approximately 4,600 people.

One resident, Harry Cheung, described hearing a very loud noise and immediately packing his belongings. He expressed uncertainty about where he would sleep, doubting he could return home.

Fire services director Andy Yeung paid tribute to the fallen firefighter, expressing profound grief and offering deepest condolences to his family. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
