In another incident showing the increasingly more bitter and desperate fight between President Trump and the various sanctuary city governments against which he is engaged, the new New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, freaked out in response to the president’s vow to cut off NYC’s funding in response to the city electing a communist.
As background, one of President Trump’s first threats first came on Truth Social shortly before the election, where he declared that part of his job as president is ensuring that endless piles of taxpayer money aren’t thrown into the gaping maw of a city that just elected a communist as mayor and, as such, is on an inexorable path to major decline.
Similarly, in an interview on CBS News, the president explained that it would be “hard” to pour more money into the city, saying, “It’s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.”
Shortly before his victory on Tuesday, November 4, the new “communist” mayor of New York City went ballistic over the president’s threats and declared that he would fight to ensure that Trump isn’t able to strip the city of all the billions of dollars in funding, as he has now repeatedly threatened.
Doing so in a pre-election speech, the new mayor declared, “What we have seen in cities and states across the country is the necessity of, not just using the bully pulpit but also the courts, to ensure that every dollar that a municipality is owed is a dollar that is paid.”
Continuing, Mamdani kept losing it over Trump’s threats, saying, “And I will take every single day, after this election, to put together my city government, my city hall, to ensure that it is prepared not only for the threats from Donald Trump, but also the threats from an affordability crisis that has put one in four New Yorkers in poverty.”
Mamdani also declared, “We see Donald Trump make these kinds of threats to this city and to its elected officials on a regular basis. The difference that we offer is a movement that will be unbowed by these threats, and we need not look far for an inspiration on how exactly to continue to fight for that which is correct in the city and in this state.”

Then, speaking again about the matter in the wake of his victory, the new mayor declared that he would start fighting Trump in the courts, saying, “The first thing is, you actually utilize the courts. You stop treating things as being law just by virtue of the fact that President Trump is saying them.” He added, “You can look at the example of California, where you find the attorney general, the governor and the mayor of LA coming together, filing a lawsuit in opposition to the deployment of the National Guard.”
And, in his victory speech, he declared, “But for too long, what New Yorkers have seen is a mayor who has been willing to work with the president at the expense of those New Yorkers. I want to make it very clear that if the president looks to come after the people of this city, I will be there standing up for them every step of the way.”
Watch Mamdani here:
President Trump, for his part, said in his post on Truth Social, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!”
He added, on that point, “It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad. It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”
