Lumps on the lips: when they are harmless and when to see a doctor
Finding small bumps on the lips can be alarming, but not all are a cause for concern. Many are benign, such as Fordyce glands—tiny sebaceous glands that are natural, non-contagious, and harmless. They often appear as small white or yellowish spots, cause no pain, and don’t require treatment.
The difference comes with symptoms. Cold sores, caused by the herpes simplex virus, usually start with burning, itching, or pain, then form fluid-filled blisters that may scab over. Stress, fever, or a weakened immune system can trigger outbreaks in people carrying the virus.
Seek medical advice if bumps are painful, rapidly spreading, inflamed, or producing discharge. Avoid squeezing or picking at them, as this can cause irritation or infection.
Most lip lumps are harmless, but monitoring changes and knowing when to consult a doctor ensures proper care and peace of mind.
