When a parent notices a sudden, large spot on their child’s foot accompanied by pain and difficulty moving, it can be alarming. One common explanation for this type of mark is a blood blister, a raised pocket of dark red or purple fluid that forms when tiny blood vessels beneath the skin break, trapping blood just underneath the surface. These blisters can appear after pressure, friction, or minor injury and sometimes look much worse than they actually are.

Blood blisters are most often harmless and typically heal on their own within one to two weeks, but they can be tender and uncomfortable. They are frequently found on fingers, toes, and feet — especially if shoes are too tight or rubbing against the skin. Treatment at home can include reducing pressure on the area, gently cleaning it, and applying loose bandages if needed. It’s important not to pop a blood blister, since the skin covering it helps protect against infection.

However, if the blister is extremely painful, continues to grow, shows signs of infection, or occurs repeatedly without clear cause, it’s wise to seek medical evaluation. Persistent or unusual skin symptoms can sometimes indicate underlying conditions that require professional care. In most cases, though, blood blisters resolve with simple care and time, giving both children and parents peace of mind.
