Attention:   Young woman in need seeks someone to adopt her baby… See more

STOP THE PRESSES, PUT DOWN YOUR DRINKS, AND HOLD ON TO YOUR HEARTS BECAUSE THEY’RE ABOUT TO BREAK! THE DESPERATE CRY THAT SHOOK THE MEXICAN INTERNET AND LEFT US WITH A LUMP IN OUR THROATS!

“ATTENTION: YOUNG WOMAN WITHOUT RESOURCES LOOKS FOR SOMEONE TO ADOPT HER BABY”… THE TERRIBLE, RAW AND PAINFUL TRUTH HIDDEN BEHIND THE DAMNED “SEE MORE” THAT MADE US ALL CRY AND SHOOK THE NATIONAL CONSCIENCE!

[RED ALERT NEWSROOM / MEXICO CITY]

Oh my goodness! People, Mexico City residents, fellow countrymen from north to south! Get ready, because the story we bring you today isn’t some gossip, nor the latest stunt from some airheaded influencer. What we’re going to tell you today is the raw truth that’s blowing up in our faces, the kind that hurts, that cuts to the bone, and that shows us that, sometimes, magical Mexico can turn into tragic Mexico in the blink of an eye.

It all started like any other afternoon on Facebook. You scroll through your feed looking for memes to have a laugh, checking out what your neighbor ate or where the rich kids are vacationing. But suddenly… BAM! A post brought the digital commotion to a screeching halt. It didn’t have any professionally produced photos or pretty filters. It was a somber black background with yellow warning letters and text that looked like it had been written in tears and blood:

⚠️Attention: ⚠️Young woman in need seeks someone to adopt her baby… See more

Good heavens! Didn’t your blood run cold just reading it? In seconds, the post went more viral than Covid. The comments, as always, were a bloodbath: “What a disgrace!” some wrote from the comfort of their iPhones. “Why spread their legs if they can’t support themselves!” barked other keyboard warriors. But there were also those who felt their hearts turn to mush: “Poor girl, how desperate!” “Someone help her, for God’s sake!”

But, my friends, the real hell, the real Greek tragedy, wasn’t in that sensationalist headline that used a “3” instead of an “E” to outsmart Zuckerberg’s algorithm. No, gentlemen. The real horror was hidden behind those three dots, behind that “See More” button that millions hesitated to press for fear of what they would find.

We here in the newsroom, where we don’t shy away from the facts and like to get to the bottom of the story, clicked on it. And what we read… Our Lady of Guadalupe, protect us with your mantle! What we read kept us up at night and compelled us to go out into the streets to search for the truth.

THE FAREWELL LETTER THAT NO ONE SHOULD EVER WRITE

The “See more” button didn’t display a cold list of requirements for an illegal adoption. It wasn’t a garage sale of human beings. It was a letter of emotional suicide. A mother, a young woman who has barely stopped being a child, saying goodbye to the only being she has ever truly loved because hunger hurts more than pride.

The young woman, whom we will call “Estrellita” to protect her identity (because the vultures are already circling), narrated her reality in a text full of spelling mistakes, but overflowing with genuine pain.

“Forgive me, God, and forgive me, my people, for what I am about to do,” the hidden text began. “I’m 17 years old. My baby is 4 months old. His father went to the USA six months ago, and I never heard from him again. I’m all alone in a tiny shack on the outskirts of town. Yesterday, I ran out of the last can of formula someone gave me at the traffic light. Today, my baby hasn’t eaten anything but rice water. He cries and cries, and my breasts are dry because I haven’t eaten in two days either. I have no family; my mother kicked me out when she found out I was pregnant. I don’t want to sell him, never! I just want someone with a roof over their head and a hot meal to take him. I’d rather he hate me when he grows up for giving him away than see him die of hunger in my arms tonight. Please don’t judge me; please help him. His name is Angelito. He’s very good; he hardly ever cries, only when his tummy hurts from hunger. Whoever wants him can come and get him at the vacant lot behind the paint factory in Ecatepec. I’ll stay here until someone good comes along. If the bad ones come first, well, too bad, whatever God wills .

Don’t tell me you didn’t get a lump in your throat! It’s desperation at its finest! A mother willing to tear out her own heart so her son has a chance to live.

THE RACE AGAINST TIME AND AGAINST THE VULTURES

As soon as we saw the location, we knew we had to act fast. The “See more” link had revealed the exact address of easy prey for the predators that lurk in this monstrous city. Human traffickers, organ traffickers, unscrupulous people who saw that post as a business opportunity, not a cry for help.

The reporting team piled into the mobile unit and we sped off towards Ecatepec, burning rubber. The traffic was a nightmare, as usual, but the adrenaline kept us looking for shortcuts. We were praying we’d get there before the cops.

Night had already fallen when we arrived at the industrial zone. The atmosphere was heavy and dark, illuminated only by a couple of flickering streetlights. The smell of chemicals from the factory mingled with the smell of misery.

There, among the trash and debris of a vacant lot, we saw a small campfire. We approached with our cameras rolling, but our hearts were in our mouths.

THE ENCOUNTER THAT SHOOK OUR SOULS

And there was Estrellita. A girl, young. She couldn’t have been more than 17, skinny, with her face stained with dirt and dried tears. She was sitting on a piece of cardboard, wrapped in an old blanket. In her arms, a barely visible bundle: Angelito.

When she saw the camera lights and our press vests, she panicked. She hugged the baby with a protective force that belied her desire to give it away.

—“Are you the ones who are going to adopt him? Are you good people?” she asked, her voice trembling, as her large eyes scanned our intentions.

We approached slowly. Not as reporters, but as human beings. We offered him water and a sandwich we had brought. He devoured it in seconds, but not before giving a tiny piece to the baby, who just sucked on it.

The baby… Oh, the baby! Little Angel was wrapped in clean cloths, but they weren’t enough to keep him warm against the night’s chill. He was thin and pale, but when he opened his eyes, he had that innocent look that melts your heart. He wasn’t crying. He seemed resigned to his fate.

“I can’t take it anymore, boss,” Estrellita told us, crying. “I went to the DIF (Family Services) and they told me I needed a lot of paperwork that I don’t have because my backpack was stolen on the bus. I went to church and the priest gave me some food, but it ran out a week ago. Nobody will hire me because I have to take care of him. I’m not a bad person, I swear to the Virgin Mary. I love him more than life itself, that’s why I want him to get away from this misery.”

WHERE IS THE SOLIDARITY IN MEXICO? THE FINAL REFLECTION

We made the necessary calls. We couldn’t just let Estrellita give away her son like that, but we also couldn’t leave her there. Paramedics arrived to check on the baby; he had mild malnutrition but was stable. The authorities arrived (late, as always) to take charge of the situation.

For tonight, Estrellita and Angelito slept in a shelter, warm and with full bellies. But what about tomorrow?

This story, my friends, isn’t meant to make us beat our chests and then go on with our lives. That “See more” click exposed the cesspool of social indifference in which we live. How many “Little Stars” are out there who don’t have a cell phone to ask for help on Facebook? How many mothers are making impossible decisions while we complain because Uber Eats took ten minutes longer?

The post was taken down, but the wound remained open. Thankfully, Angelito wasn’t adopted by a stranger on Facebook that night. But his future remains uncertain in a country where poverty forces you to choose between starving to death with your child or giving them away so they can survive.

What a fucking tragedy, Mexico! What a fucking disgrace! I hope this case serves a purpose beyond just gaining likes and shares. I hope it awakens our conscience.

We will continue to report on what happens to Estrellita and Angelito. For now, please pray for them, and if you see someone on the street asking for help, don’t judge so quickly. Sometimes, behind a desperate act, there is a love greater than fear.
