My family was happy because my father remarried at 60 to a woman 30 years younger… but on their wedding night we heard a strange scream, and what I saw when I entered left me speechless
When my father announced that he would remarry at age 60, the whole family was surprised… but we were also filled with joy. After two decades of loneliness, we finally saw him smile again.
No one imagined that on their wedding night we would hear a terrifying scream that would make us run down the hallway, convinced that something terrible had happened. What we saw when we opened the door we will never forget.
A man who gave up everything for his daughters
My father, Edward Martins, turned sixty this spring.
My mother passed away when my sister and I were still studying at university. Since then, for more than twenty years, he lived completely alone. He never went back to dating, he never tried to rebuild his life. His days were reduced to work, Sunday mass and his small garden on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte.
Family members always insisted:
âEduardo, you are still strong and healthy. No one should live alone forever.
He just smiled and said calmly:
âWhen my daughters are on their way, I will think of myselfâ.
And he meant it.
The call that changed everything
When my sister got married and I got a good position in SĂŁo Paulo, my father finally had time to look at his own life. One night in November, he called us with a warm, soft tone that was almost shy, a tone that we had not heard since the time my mother lived.
âI met someone âsaid.
âIt’s called Marina.
My sister and I froze. Marina was thirty years old: half my father’s age.
She worked as an accountant at an insurance company, was divorced and had no children. They had met at a senior yoga class at the community center.
At first we thought the worst: âShe must be interested in her moneyâ. But when we finally met her… our suspicions faded. Marina was kind, respectful, sweet. And most importantly:Â I looked at my father with real tenderness, and he looked at her with a peace we had never seen before.
A simple wedding that filled our souls
The ceremony was simple, intimate and beautiful. In the backyard of the family home, under an old mango tree adorned with warm lights. Roast chicken, soft drinks, laughter, sincere hugs… and some tears that no one wanted to hide.
Marina was wearing a light pink dress, her hair up, and a soft expression. My father seemed like a young man in love: nervous, smiling, almost childish.
While we were all helping to organize the table after the reception, my sister joked:
âDad, try not to make too much noise tonight, okay? The walls are thin…
Dad laughed, pretended to get upset and said:
âCome on, go take care of your things, brat.
He then took Marina’s hand and led her to the master bedroom, the same one he had shared with my mother for over thirty years. We had suggested redecorating it before the wedding, but he refused.
âAs it is, it gives me peace âresponded.
The scream that woke us up at midnight
Around midnight, a noise woke me up. I thought it was the wind… maybe a cat. But then, a high-pitched scream, so unexpected that my skin crawled.
My sister and I looked at each other terrified and ran towards our father’s room.
Behind the door, we heard Marina’s trembling voice:
âNo! Please… don’t do that!
I pushed the door without thinking.
What I saw inside… left me speechless
The scene seemed straight out of a clumsy romantic comedy, not something tragic as we had imagined.
My father was lying on the ground, covered in petals, holding what was left of a huge bouquet of flowers. He had tried to prepare a romantic surprise for Marina… but he tripped over the old carpet in the room.
When she fell, the noise was so loud that Marina, half asleep, believed that something terrible was happening and screamed in fright. She was sitting on the bed, with one hand on her chest and her eyes wide.
But when he saw us appear, he started laughing nervously.
My father, red as a tomato, also laughed as he tried to get up.
âSorry… I think this rug already lived too long âjoked.
A chaotic night… that became a precious memory
We helped collect the flowers and, now calmer, we all sat in the living room with a mixture of relief and laughter. Minutes before we were imagining the worst; Now we were laughing as if nothing had happened.
That night I understood:
My father’s love had not died with my mother. He had just been waiting for the right moment to be reborn.
Despite the age difference, despite their fears, he and Marina were building something sincere, imperfect and deeply real.
They slept hugging each other, still laughing at the incident. And for the first time in many years… The house once again felt complete, alive, happy.
The scream that chilled our blood that night became one of the most beloved anecdotes of our family. Proof that love, when it comes, no matter if it comes at 20, 40 or 60… always deserves to be celebrated.
